In 1983 he graduated from Warsaw Medical University where he received a medical degree.
In the fall of 1980 he was one of the cofounders of the Independent Student Union (a sister organization to "Solidarność" trade union that was independent from the communist government). In later years he was the head of the Independent Student Union on Warsaw Medical University. After declaring in Poland Martial law in 1981 he was involved in activities of the underground movement of the opposition.
In 2000 and 2002 he finished postgraduate studies in the fields of health economics and bioethics. Since 2010 he has lectured family medicine on Warsaw Medical University. In 2011 he received an M.D. at Military Medical Institute.
Since 1993 he is committed to activities of self-government of physicians and dental practitioners. He posted number of functions in regional and national Chamber of Physicians and Dentists. In the years 2001 – 2010 he was the president of the Polish Chamber of Physicians and Dentists.
In 1983 he began working in Warsaw as a physician and he has been working there until today. In 1994 he became a specialist in the field of family medicine. Since 1996 he ran in Warsaw an outpatient clinic. For many years he worked in medical emergency service in Warsaw, as an occupational physician and a lecturer at Warsaw Medical University. In the years 2013 – 2015 he was the chairman of the board of St. Sophia Hospital in Warsaw.
After general elections in October 2015 he become a member of the higher chamber of the Polish parliament (the Polish Senate) and on the 16th November 2015 he was nominated for the post of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Poland.
He is married and he has 8 children (4 sons and 4 daughters) and 8 grandchildren.
